overseers' house and originally part of Stone Fort Estate.
Clay Villa Plantation House and Gardens can be described as 'St. Kitts Best Kept Secret' - a hidden treasure behind high walls', 'A Pandora's Box full of delightful surprises and an attraction Beyond
the Ordinary. Clay Villa Plantation is a ten acre property(still aworking plantation ), a unique Kittitian family home whose trustees are descendants of the original (Carib) Indians. This plantation is and was the smallest one on St. Kitts and is of historic importance as well as
a Kittitian Legacy because the owners past and present
did not believe in slavery and it was only free men, women and family members who worked on the plantation. When the First Premier of St. Kitts, Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw nationalised all the plantations of St.Kitts, Clay Villa was the only one left untouched due to the respect
shown to the African people and their descendants over several centuries up to and including present day as well as the Carib Heritage of the owners. A tour of Clay Villa Plantation will reveal the role and impact of the Amerindian, British(colonial)
and African legacies of today's Kittitian culture, relives the past, experiences present day island life and that of a working plantation as well as envisions the future to come. Your walking tour/visit will begin with a leisurely stroll through exotic, butterfly, rainforest. magnificent, enchanted gardens ablaze with a profusion of flora, fauna, luscious fragrant fruits and lush mature tropical plants and trees where an interesting
array of wildlife can be seen such as green vervet monkeys, fresh water turtles, red-footed tortoises, beautiful colourful birds, playful sharks and tropical fish call their home. The Stanley Gumbs Museum is home to an impressive abundance of worldwide treasures, artefacts from a bygone era, jewellery, sculptures, Carib pottery, antique maps, tapestries, contemporary art, locally crafted art and many more amazing collections to view.
The prestigious Original Plantation House itself, chronicles the past and
recounts a tale of how a family lived on a working plantation. Admire the intricate hand carved furniture, italian glass art, hand painted fans, embroidered umbrellas, paintings and momentarily experience present daylife. It is a loving, thoughtful juxtaposition of the ancient and modern.
Following your tour, there is a cellar pub 'THE BLUE ANCHOR’ where a most unique 'one of a kind' freshly blended fruit (from the plantation gardens) and/or rum punches can be purchased and a gift shop where you can shop for souvenirs and artwork by Carib Artist MARIE FER. Well maintained washroom facilities are located at key stops on site. Your visit to Clay Villa Plantation can be summarised as a true 'Garden of Eden'.
